1. Overview
YoungStars Hope Foundation–Africa ("we", "us", "the Foundation") respects your privacy. This Policy explains what personal information we collect through this website (youngstarsafrica.org), why we collect it, who we share it with, and the rights you have over it. It applies to anyone who browses the Site, applies to volunteer, makes a donation, or subscribes to our newsletter.
2. Who We Are
YoungStars Hope Foundation–Africa is the data controller for information collected through this Site. [Insert registration type and number, e.g. registered under the NGO Coordination Act / as a Trust], based in Kitui / Nairobi, Kenya. Contact details are in Section 14.
3. What We Collect
We only collect what a specific form on this Site asks for:
| Information | When | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Full name, email, phone number, area of interest, availability, message | You submit the Volunteer application form | To review your application and contact you about volunteering |
| Email address, name (optional) | You subscribe to our newsletter | To send you programme updates and impact stories |
| Phone number, donation amount, name (optional) | You make a donation | To request payment via M-Pesa and thank you for your gift |
| IP address, browser and device type | Automatically, on every page visit | Standard web-server and content-delivery operation and security — not used for tracking or advertising |
We do not ask for national ID numbers, payment card details, or M-Pesa PINs anywhere on this Site.
4. How We Use It
- To respond to volunteer applications and coordinate placements;
- To process donation requests through our payment channels;
- To send newsletter updates to people who asked for them;
- To keep the Site secure and working correctly;
- To meet legal or regulatory obligations where applicable.
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to anyone.
5. Legal Basis for Processing
Under Kenya's Data Protection Act, 2019, we rely on:
- Consent — for newsletter sign-ups and volunteer applications, given when you tick the "I agree" box and submit a form;
- Contract / steps prior to a contract — for processing a donation you've chosen to make;
- Legitimate interest — for basic security and operation of the Site (e.g. blocking spam submissions).
8. Data Retention
We keep volunteer application details for as long as needed to consider and manage your involvement, and donation/contact records as needed for our financial and reporting obligations. Newsletter emails are kept until you unsubscribe. You can ask us to delete your information at any time (see Section 10).
9. Children's Privacy
The public forms on this Site are intended for adults (18+) acting on their own behalf — for example, a parent or guardian enquiring on a child's behalf. We do not knowingly collect personal data directly from children through these forms. Information about a minor participating in our programs is collected separately, offline or through a parent/guardian, with appropriate consent and additional safeguarding measures.
10. Your Rights
Under the Data Protection Act, 2019, you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you;
- Ask us to correct inaccurate data;
- Ask us to delete your data ("right to erasure");
- Object to or restrict certain processing;
- Withdraw consent at any time (e.g. unsubscribe from the newsletter);
- Lodge a complaint with the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC), Kenya, if you believe we have mishandled your data.
To exercise any of these, contact us using the details in Section 14.
11. Data Security
We serve this Site over HTTPS, apply a Content-Security-Policy to reduce the risk of malicious scripts, and use spam-detection (honeypot fields) on our forms. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we take reasonable, proportionate steps to protect your information.
12. International Transfers
Some of the third-party providers listed in Section 6 may process or store data outside Kenya. Where this happens, we rely on those providers' own safeguards and, where required by law, appropriate transfer mechanisms.
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Policy from time to time to reflect changes in how the Site works or in applicable law. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page shows the most recent revision.
